OffHook Networking OffHook uses UDP protocols for communication, and should work fine on most networks. If you are unsure about compatibility with your network, we recommend downloading the application and experimenting in demo mode before purchasing a license. The demo is fully featured, but it only runs for ten minutes. OffHook users must be on the same subnet (obviously) --- otherwise the network messages that OffHook sends to other users will likely be dropped. If users are all sharing the same router, then they are probably on the same subnet. By default, OffHook sends and receives on Port 62007, but this can be changed in settings. Users will need to make sure that their firewalls permit UDP traffic through the desired port. In our testing: Win XP/Vista: We had to open our desired port( i.e., create an Exception in the Windows firewall). Windows 2000: The firewall is off by default in Windows 2000, so no actions were necessary. We're certain you would have to open the right port. Ubuntu 8.x: It was necessary to open a port. (We use Firestarter to control Ubuntu's firewall.) Mac OS X Panther and Tiger: Worked fine with the built-in firewall; it wasn't necessary to open any ports. Mac OS X Leopard: Works fine with the new Leopard application firewall, but it will be necessary to authorize OffHook at each launch. Leopard's built-in application signing functionality won't persist between reboots. Click here for more information on using OffHook under Leopard. |
